Slow Down…

During this last holiday I made a decision to digitally switch off and slow down.  There was wifi at the villa but I needed to have a break from the emails and social media.  I never wear a watch when I’m holiday, I eat when I’m hungry, sleep when I’m tired and try not to be dictated to by the time as we do this enough in our day to day lives!

We’ve had some really busy times over the last few months meaning some long working days and working a little over the weekends to catch up. I’ve said before, working for yourself can be feast or famine.  You’ve got to make the most of the work whilst it’s there.

If you’re anything like us, we always ‘reassess our lives’ (sounds much more dramatic than it actually is) when we’re away.  We take time to think about changes we’d like to make (or dreams we have) and I thought I’d share some of those with you…

Switching off

The trouble with having your emails on your phone is that you are always connected to work. Since we’ve been back not to reply to work emails out of office hours (i.e. after 6pm). I need to be able to switch off from work mode in the evenings allowing my mind to unwind.

Slowing down

After a break from work, it’s obviously going to be busy catching up with emails and client work. As you know, I love a list and ploughing through to tick everything off is extremely satisfying! However, I need to remind myself that not everything needs to be done right this instant.  Something’s can wait until tomorrow, next week or even next month.

Saying no

This leads on from slowing down. Some weeks our diaries are packed with work appointments, life appointments and social gatherings. I need to start saying no to every invite or meeting and realise that I’m not going to miss out.  I find it difficult to just sit and relax some times, doing nothing but I need to work on this and find something that means I’m actually winding down.

None of these points are new and groundbreaking, but essentially we want to keep that chilled holiday mode going for as long as possible!!

I think sometimes we also just need to take a step back and look at how BUSY we’ve become.

Are we all just busy being busy?!

I definitely need to try and make an effort to slow down more. First of all I need to stop replying to emails at 1am (especially since I always make mistakes in these emails) and I need to remember to step away from social media when I’m on holidays. As you said, we’re always connected to our work now. We no longer finish at 5, turn off our computer and go home because we carry our computer with us
