Top 5 Vegas Visits!

We have just had 5 whirlwind days in Las Vegas with some friends.  For those who haven’t been, it’s a crazy city that never sleeps (much like New York).  This was my first visit and I can see why people return again and again.  It’s not just all about the casinos and gambling.

See a Show

There are SO many different big shows to choose from with each hotel hosting something.  We were due to see the MJ One show by Cirque de Soleil at Mandalay Bay but this was cancelled all week due to the tragic events just before we arrived. We managed to book tickets for Cirque de Soleil ‘O’ at the Bellagio instead which was fantastic.  There is SO much choice there is no doubt that you will find something for you.  Whether that’s Celine Dion’s residence at Ceasars Palace, a magic show or a tribute act you’ll never be stuck for what to see!

Helicopter Tour

We decided to spend a little more than we would usually on our ‘trips’.  We took a helicopter out to the Grand Canyon and got dropped off for a champagne breakfast.  It takes approx 45 mins to fly out to the Canyon and you get to see the Hoover Dam.  The Grand Canyon is in a different state to Las Vegas and is in a different time zone (who knew!).  It’s SO hard to explain or show on photos the vastness of the Canyon and the photos don’t do it any justice.

Explore the Hotels

Be sure to visit each hotel on the strip – every one has a theme and is completely different to the last. Most hotels also have an ‘attraction’ – The Bellagio fountains at night is an obvious one but this hotel also has a flower garden which is themed for the season.  We stayed at the Wynn hotel and this has a water based “show” in the early evening and a smaller “musical” fountain.  The Venetian has the famous gondola rides or even the Mirage which has a volcano themed fire and fountain display in the evening.  There are LOADS of shops within each hotel as well.

Take a Limo Tour

We surprised the boys on our trip by booking a limo for the evening. Presidential Limo’s collected us at 7pm and took us round the various sights including the Las Vegas sign and The Bellagio fountains. Our chauffeur Kevin was really good fun and was able to tell us all sorts of nuggets of information as we whizzed along the strip including joining in with our “singing”!  He was able to stop outside the attractions or hotels so that we didn’t have to walk too far.  We were supposed to take a trip out to Downtown Vegas including Freemont but as we had done this the previous evening Kevin dropped us at the Stratosphere Hotel to see the strip from the top at night.  Presidential were a great company to use, they were easy to contact and nothing was too much trouble.

Take a trip to Freemont

This is the old town of Las Vegas and is about a 15 minute taxi ride from the main strip.  We visited in the evening when the locals are out, there are street performers and live bands to see. The beers are cheaper and the gambling minimum bets are smaller.  The government have spent the last 10 years making this a better, safer place for tourists to see so be sure to take a look.

There are LOADS of things we didn’t do.  We didn’t see an Elvis act.  We didn’t visit the old Neon Sign Scrapyard.  We didn’t go to the outlet shopping mall just on the outskirts of the city.  We didn’t have a drink in the Peppermill where the Rat Pack used to hang out.  If we went back I don’t think we’d be bored.  I’d like to combine it with another city e.g San Fransisco – so that we’re not doing two 10 hour flights in 5 days!
