Book Review #6

I haven’t done a book review in FOREVER.  However after spending 20 hours on a plane during our trip to Vegas it was the perfect opportunity to get some reading in!

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

I started to read this book before we went away and finished it on the flight over.  I’d picked it up for two reasons…it was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2017 AND Barack Obama has given his stamp of approval.  Let’s start by saying it’s not a cheery book to say the least.  It tells the story of Cora, a slave on a Georgia cotton plantation and her escape using the ‘underground railroad’.  What the author does however is turn the original railroad (a secret network organised by people who helped men, women, and children escape from slavery to freedom) into an actual railroad.  Whitehead does an excellent job of portraying slavery and America as a slave nation.

I had to really concentrate on the characters and story line so it did take me longer than usual to read.  Would really recommend this if you’re looking for something a little different.

The Ozone Hotel*

This is a COMPLETELY different type of book to Underground Railroad.  It’s fun, colourful and the characters have outrageous behaviour.  The story begins in 1929 when Mr Brown, a bank clerk, unexpectedly receives a Golden Ticket enabling him to travel to the Ozone Hotel, a magnificent and mysterious palatial hotel floating above the clouds. Mr Brown finds himself whisked from London and embarking on an adventure which changes his life.  We meet several of the hotels guests, also from different time periods and learn their stories.  I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that’s had such crazy flamboyant characters that take such a crazy adventure!  I don’t normally reach for a Sci-Fi book but this has definitely changed my opinion if all are as hilarious as this!

What have you been reading recently that you can recommend?!
