Taster Meal at The Moonraker Hotel

We continued JB’s big birthday celebrations last week with a trip to The Moonraker Hotel near Bradford on Avon.  Some friends were extremely generous and treated JB (& me!) to the 5 course taster menu.

Strangely enough, we’d never heard of this hotel despite it being nearly on our doorstep.  It was a cold, wintry night so unfortunately we couldn’t see the outside of the grade II listed Georgian hotel to it’s full potential.  Mentioned in the Domesday Book as being part of the Abbess of Glastonbury’s estate, the Moonraker was originally built in classic Queen Anne style before being upgraded in the 17th century to Bath stone.

When we made our reservation we made them aware of JB’s dairy intolerance and they confirmed it wouldn’t cause any problems.  They did however make both of our meals dairy free which wasn’t a huge problem (until I saw the dessert I missed out on!)

The restaurant was large and airy and had a huge open fireplace at one end which is probably lit in colder weather making it feel super cosy.  After ordering a G&T to enjoy before dinner, we settled at our table, ready for the big feast!  The taster menu was as follows:

Vanilla confit salmon, beetroot, keta & borage

Ham hock and smoked chicken terrine

Beetroot and onion soup

Feather blade of beef with saute potatoes and bacon hash

Baked apple with rum soaked fruits (I missed out on the lemon meringue pie!!)

We agreed that the beef was by far the best course.  It melted under the knife and was complimented by the bacon hash.  I wasn’t a fan of the salmon but JB took advantage of that situation!  My only ‘complaint’ (& it wasn’t really a complaint by any means) was that it took 30 minutes for our drinks to arrive.  Our first 3 courses came out super quickly but there was a bigger gap for the beef and then the dessert.  We later learnt that there was quite a large party eating in another part of the restaurant so this was probably an factor.

It would be great to return to the Moonraker Hotel in the future, perhaps for Sunday lunch so that we can see the outside of the building and it’s grounds in their full glory!

This food looks delicious, I always worry that taster menu portions will be too small and I’ll be hungry afterwards, especially if I don’t like something x
