Stepping into the world of Reflexology

If you know me, you know JB and I like to have a massage at our favourite day spa, Radiance Wellbeing in Bath.  I was recently invited to try one of their new holistic treatments – reflexology.  I’d never had this done before and to be honest, I knew little about what was involved or what to expect.  My appointment was quite timely as I’d been to London the day before and my feet were really aching!

Reflexology has been carried out for thousands of years.  It can be dated back to the Egyptians – hieroglyphics have been found showing feet being massaged.  Your foot reflects your body – your big toe is your head and then the inside sole is your spine.  By touching certain pressure points on your foot, your therapist can feel different areas of tension.

The treatment room is set up exactly as it would be for a massage.  Low lighting and a bed with lots of cosy blankets to snuggle under.  The treatment started with a Himalayan foot soak using Absolute Aromas Bath Salt – I opted for Relaxation.

I then got into the bed, closed my eyes and let the practice take place.  Some people like to chat whilst they have it done or you can totally relax.  Some people find it more relaxing than a massage as you aren’t having to turn over half way through.  It was really relaxing and the pressure was strong enough so that it didn’t tickle.

The treatment itself lasted for 45 minutes followed by a 15 minute consultation.  I should note that the therapists aren’t doctors so they can’t diagnose anything.  During my consultation, Tash said she noticed some issues with my sinuses which may indicate the start of cold (great!).  She also said I had tension in my lower back (which was from all the dancing at The Killers the night before) plus she noticed something breathing related.  I was really surprised at these comments – I hadn’t told her that I’d been marching around London the day before or that I’m asthmatic.

I was quite tired for the first 15 minutes after having it done which is probably down to a busy few days and taking time to relax.  However, once I’d had my consultation and then started to make my way home, I felt I’d had a weight lifted and felt ‘lighter’.  I’m told that some people can find it the complete opposite and be quite teary afterwards.

I’d definitely have the treatment done again – Radiance charge £44.95 for a 45 minute treatment and 15 minute consultation.

It sounds so good to have done, I’m going to see if anywhere local to me offers those treatments.
