Book Review #8

If you read my Surviving a Long Haul flight post, you’ll know how many hours in the air we had whilst travelling to New Zealand.   Not surprisingly, I read a LOT whilst on the plane.  Its been a while since I did a book review and as I read a stack of books I thought it was time to do another book review!

The Guilty Wife

I’d started this book a couple of days before we left and I was already gripped by the story.  Needless to say, I finished it on the flight within a few hours!  Bethany runs her own succesful business and is happily married.  Or she thinks she is until she meets a famous client who then becomes more than a photography project.  When there is a murder, Bethany’s secret is known by someone else and she becomes the number one suspect in the investigation.  Admittedily I had worked out the ending long before I got there and there’s a few holes in the plot (unless I didn’t read a couple of pages properly).

Friend Request

I picked this one out simply because it’s main story line comes from social media.  It’s something we ALL relate to these day!  I can’t give too much away without revealing the plot but don’t believe every friend request or follow you receive on social media.  Not everything is always at it seems!!

Small Great Things

Initially I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy this book as I found the first couple of chapters pretty hard going.  I’m really glad I persevered!  Once I’d got past the first couple of chapters, I couldn’t put it down.  The book discusses racism, privilege and justice.  The story is told by three people, a black nurse, a white supremacist and a white lawyer.  It’s quite thought provoking and I found myself wondering how there are still events like this happening in this day.  I think this is being made into a film which I’m sure will be a huge success!

I Am Watching You

I picked another book that’s told by the different characters perspective!  This is a story of two young teenagers that head to the big city of London after finishing exams.  They meet a couple of men who have just been released from prison on the train and end up meeting them in a club.  One of the teenagers goes missing at the end of the evening.  The story starts with a lady (Ella), who sees the group of teens on the train and hears a conversation that concerns her.  She considers going to the police but the talks herself out of it – until she sees the news the following day that one of them is missing.   The story then jumps forward a year, the teenager is still missing and Ella is still riddled with guilt.  There are few TOO many characters in the book and I did get a bit confused in places…however that might be jet lag related!
