Small Steps to Help the Planet

The idea to write this blog has been running through my mind since we watched that episode of Blue Planet last year with the Mummy Whale.  I don’t want this to come across as being a bashing to everyone but I hope that if we all make these small steps, we can help save our planet for generations to come.  I remember watching Blue Peter in my younger days and would constantly take part in the different challenges they had going…and getting my very own green Blue Peter badge!

Switch to Eco Friendly Products

We’ve also been road testing a couple of eco friendly products this past couple of weeks.  Typically, the week I want to try is the week that the shelves are pretty bare at my local Tesco because of the snow.   Method have launched their rose gold collection which is the bloggers colour of choice!  Unfortunately there were none of these available so I picked up the limited edition botanical garden hand wash.  I’ve also got the Tesco own brand of eco anti bacterial spray.  We haven’t noticed any difference in quality of these products but knowing we’re helping to protect the environment makes cleaning a little less tiresome!

RECYCLE RECYCLE RECYCLE!

Recycling is a never ending battle in this house – there is always something on the side in the kitchen waiting to go out into one of the bins.  It really highlights how much packaging everything comes in and how much of that is unnecessary.  Don’t forget that all your cans and tins should be washed out first.  One thing I’ve recently learnt is that plastic bottle tops cannot be recycled…so remove these before you put the bottle in the bin.

Use Less Plastic

In the last couple of weeks of doing the food shop, I’ve really tried to look at what comes in plastic and what can be avoided.  It’s SO difficult!  Pre-packed fruit and veg is everywhere and trying to buy it on it’s own is proving tricky where I live.  There is a small market every Friday so I might have to switch to getting it all from there.

One positive move I have made, is switching to old school milk bottles.  We’ve been having our milk delivered for a few years now but when they announced they could do classic milk bottles I made the change.  It’s a little more expensive but if it’s one less plastic bottle in the ocean then it’s good enough for me!

Mindful Eating

Now I’m not going to start being all ‘preachy’ and push vegetarianism or veganism down your throats.  Since JB discovered that he can’t have dairy, the amount that comes into this house is very small.  As you know, I’m a HUGE tea lover and I’m yet to find an milk alternative that fits the bill.  We eat vegetarian food a couple of times a week and when we do venture out for tea and cake I’ll often take a look at the vegan choice.  There is SO much choice out there now to cater for everyone’s needs that sometimes the alternative option often sounds better!

I love this so much! I love finding ECO friendly favourites to enjoy, they are so good! I didn’t realise Tesco did an eco range now too! 🙂

It’s like an adventure in itself! I discovered “real foods exeter” this week and they have SO MANY eco friendly products, might to a review of it. I feel so motivated to make the changes, have my keepy cup(s) all ready and am continually looking for new things to try!

The packaging of fruit & veg drives me nuts! I was actually chatting to my Mam about this at the weekend and she was saying that in the ’80s, nearly all fruit and veg were in boxes in the supermarket and they used brown paper bags to put them in when shopping. The ‘Super 6’ deals on fruit & veg have a lot to answer for! I think that episode got us all thinking xx

I now use the paper mushroom bags for all my veg and made a point of telling the cashier i “was disappointed in your store for wrapping ONE aubergine in plastic!”

Recycling is a big deal to me and always has been. I feel like its the least we can do. My daughters have learnt how important it is too so whenever we visit a place they will always ask where the recycling bin is. It can be embarrassing when that person doesn’t have a separate bin in their house lol!

My step daughter thinks it’s all a terrible bore at 14!

Oh I never knew about the bottle tops when recycling, thanks for pointing that out! I’ll have to remember to remove them next time x
