Gong Bath Experience

Imagine lying in a room where someone is playing soothing sounds on a variety of bells, rattles, sounding bowls and gongs allowing yourself total relaxation.  I was invited to try my first Gong Bath by Helen from Sandalphonic Healing.

So what the heck is a gong bath I hear you ask?!  A gong bath is a form of sound therapy designed to bring about healing and encourage meditation. A workshop gives you the opportunity to expand into the infinite, a chance to relax and reconnect with yourself while basking in the soothing sounds of the gong.

I arrived at the Santosha Studio in Chippenham where Helen holds one of her monthly sessions.  Unsure what to expect I found myself in a room where all the ‘equipment’ was set up in the middle with all the ‘beds’ arranged around it.  It didn’t matter where I positioned myself as the gongs would be heard exactly the same wherever you were.

Once I was settled under the cosy warm blankets with a cushion for my head and under my knees I closed my eyes and started to relax.  Helen then began to play the gongs very softly and over the session the volume increased.  The playing technique was changed so there was no fixed rhythm.  The session ended with a few minutes of silence so that your body can integrate the sounds it has just received.

I’ll admit that the first 5-10 minutes I didn’t really know what to expect so it took me a while to fully relax and unwind.  Having already been a yoga fan a few years back, I was used to the technique of allowing thoughts to cross my mind and then letting them go.  It wasn’t until my second session that I started to see the benefits – the sounds strip away stresses and strains and I felt calm, relaxed and revitalised, ready to face the world again.

Helen came found sound healing in Spring 2014 through attending a 10-week meditation course, which she thought at the time would help her through a stressful period of her life. What she hadn’t realised was the impact it had on her and just how much it would change her and enable her to in turn help others.

Helen has monthly gong baths in Chippenham which can be booked via this link for £12.50 for an hour of relaxation.
