A coffee lover I am not however I could drink tea forever. I’m a teabag thrown in a cup girl who wants to start taking the time at weekends to enjoy a pot of tea that’s properly brewed rather than the 100mph version I get during the week.
Tea Inc in Devizes is the perfect place for me to learn more about different types of tea and to master the art of slowing down to savour the ritual.
Run by the wonderfully passionate Ramona and Alan, Tea Inc was opened in 2014. It was during a holiday to Bratislava back in 2006 that the couple stumbled across a tea house and straight away took inspiration to open something similar at home.
With the motto ‘Nothing is Ordinary’ it’s clear to see that every crooked nook of the 300 year old building has been utilised to get the maximum out of it.
Not only do they serve over 30 different teas, they also blend their own unique flavourings. I was given Hope and Glory which is one of their very special blends to honour the town of Devizes. Containing Earl Grey blue flowers, wild cherries and golden tipped organic Darjeeling it represents the towns colours. Hope and Glory is also their chariTEA. £1 from every sale is given to the Assize Court renovation project.
Of course, if you’re not a tea drinker, you’re well catered for in the coffee department. If you’re feeling peckish, there’s a small lunch menu that includes their infamous Smokey & The Bandit – a mixture of chicken, chorizo, cheese and BBQ…I’m not going to give too much away! Ramona tried to remove this from the menu once but locals kicked up that their favourite food had been removed so it was quickly reinstated! Naturally there is plenty of cake to choose from because what is a cup of tea without cake!
I dared to ask Ramona what her favourite tea was – she couldn’t possibly pick one! Dependent on her mood, sometimes she loves a chai tea with the comfort of milk, other times it’s a green tea or a matcha. If she’s feeling inspired she might thrown a few sprinkles of various leaves in the pot and make a one off blend!
Not wanting to rest on their laurels, Ramona and Alan are working behind the scenes to open another cafe in Marlborough later in 2019. I’ll definitely be visiting in the coming months!
Next time you’re in Devizes, be sure to explore The Ginnel and all the wonderful independent businesses that are tucked away down the mysterious alley.
