Discovering Nkuku

We passed Nkuku several times whilst on our trip to Devon.  Advertised as a lifestyle store, intrigue got the better of me and we stopped on our way back from a a day trip.

Set up by Ali and Alex Cooke who shared a passion for travel and culture they moved out of London in search of doing ‘something differently’.  They’re travels took them far and wide where they encountered talented craftsmen and their beautiful wares.  The name ‘Nkuku’ is borrowed from a hut in Zambia and with their business plan scribbled on the back of a book they started their journey.

Inside Aladdins Cave of Nkuku

Greeted by a huge heavy iron door, you enter a barn that has been converted complete with mezzanine floor. It’s like entering an Aladdin’s Cave with everything you need to furnish every corner of your home and garden.  This is whilst in the knowledge you are supporting small craftsmen from around the globe.

There were SO many items I could have bought during our visit.  Sadly the car was fully loaded on the way down so I knew we’d struggle to get things back.  So I’ve joined the mailing list and already have a full wish list from the website!

Sadly we didn’t visit the cafe or courtyard area as we had the dogs with us.

Such a shame that this incredible boutique store isn’t on my doorstep…although I think my bank balance is probably secretly pleased!
