A New Candle in Town

Anyone who knows me, knows I have a thing for candles – there is always one burning in our house, winter or summer and the scents change with the season.  When I stumbled across Christopher Scents on Twitter, I knew I had to get my hands on one and learn a little more about this new business venture.

As soon as I opened my package, the scent of Lime Basil & Mandarin immediately hit me.  This candle isn’t overpowering and it wasn’t long before our room was filled with beautiful aromas of summer after being lit.

Tell us about Christopher Scents!

Christopher Scents are luxurious, handmade candles made from Natural Soy Wax. I create a range of candles that contain beautiful and varied fragrances, available in limited batches, with popular fragrances making regular appearances. All candles are boxed in simplistic, sleek and elegant boxes with a stylish black ribbon to complete the sophisticated look.

Where do you get the inspiration for your fragrances?

Life experiences are initially my starting point when deciding the fragrances to use; I love how different scents can instantly remind us of certain places and events in our lives. For instance, the minute I smell Lemongrass & Ginger I’m transported to the wonderful Thailand (my favourite holiday destination), or Cinnamon Stick that reminds me of the many happy Christmas times spent with my husband.

Generally, I prefer fragrances that are fresh, natural and delicate on the senses.

How did you get into candle making?

My love for different candles prompted my husband to suggest that I make my own, it was he that bought me my first candle-making set. After a small, initial batch and positive feedback from family members, I decided to go further and design a logo, packaging and range of fragranced Soy Wax candles to sell.

What’s the biggest challenge of business so far that you’ve had to overcome?

I’ve found reaching a large audience the hardest thing to achieve, with it being something I’m still very much trying to obtain. You can find Christopher Scents on Instagram (@@Christopher_scents), Twitter (@candlesbyccs), Etsy and eBay – I’m planning on launching a Facebook page too, hopefully this feature will help too!

What does a typical day look like for you?

Unfortunately making candles is not my full-time job just yet, but hopefully will be in the future. Currently I work in recruitment, so my days are spent in an office with my spare time focused on making candles, advertising, promoting and selling! I like to read before bed to relax me.

What does the future hold?

The future hopefully holds the capability to make more candles at once by obtaining larger means of production, more varied fragrances and bigger sales! Ultimately though I’d like to make this my full time career eventually, although I imagine that is far in the future, however that depends on Christopher Scents initial success.

What’s the best thing about what you do?

The best thing I do is provide enjoyment, I love receiving messages from my customers telling me about how much they love their candles. Surprise Instagram or Twitter messages with photos of my candles in people’s homes makes me so happy, I know I’m doing something right that way!

Other than your own candles, what brand /fragrance is your favourite?!

I love Jo Malone candles because of their fragrance choices and overall image, although I must admit an overall love for locally made candles that you can find at craft fairs and the like, there’s something so personal about them. My favourite scents are lemongrass, fig and cinnamon at Christmas.

Christopher Scents candles are available for an absolute bargain price of £10+PP and come in scents such as Lime Basil & Mandarin (which I can confirm is AMAZING!), Coconut Island, Orange & Honey and Maraschino Cherry.
