Freaking out to Freakshakes!

A what now?!  A freakshake – or a pimped up version of a milkshake that’s what!  These monster milkshakes started out in Australia and have now made their way over to the UK.  The concept is simple…the bigger the better and anything goes – top that shake with cream, chocolate buttons, brownies, marshmallows, sprinkles, a doughnut and pretzels (& that’s the topping on ONE shake!)

I know a few places in London have picked this up and Maxwell’s in Covent Garden now has a bar dedicated to Freakshakes.

Living in sleepy Wiltshire, we had to travel to Bristol to the Beehive Cafe in Downend to sample ours.

The cafe is tucked away on the high street and isn’t particularly big however we were lucky and managed to get a seat straight away.  Within 10 minutes of our arrival, the queue was out the door proving the popularity of this new phenomenon.

Menu

I opted for the Oreo Overdose and Olivia chose the Chocolicious (of course) – there were 9 to try in total and making a decision was difficult!  I wondered if the fruity ones wouldn’t have been so heavy…doubtful!

Double Trouble

My Oreo Overdose had broken Oreos and ice-cream within the jug plus an Oreo precariously balanced on top together with cream, pretzels, chocolate buttons, marshallows and nutella.  It wasn’t horrendously sweet which was I surprised about.

Olivia’s was almost identical but hers had chocolate brownies in rather than Oreos.  Her’s was TOO sweet for me but she was suitably impressed with the offering.

What I was super impressed with though, was that they went out of their way to make John a special dairy free Freakshake so he could enjoy the experience as well – his was made with soya milk, bananas, popcorn, marshmallows and pretzels with a swish of chocolate sauce.

Special Freakshake…for Special People

I had to admit defeat – I couldn’t manage a mouthful let alone the whole doughnut on top of mine!!  It’s probably got a week’s worth of calories in but it was SOOO worth it!

Finished!!!!!

These were extremely well priced at £4.95 each – I would DEF recommend a visit to the Beehive Cafe this summer!!  (I have to admit, the food looked pretty good as well that we saw coming out whilst we were enjoying our Freakshakes).

They’ve also launched a Hot-Choc-Attack which looks amazing…perhaps we’d better visit again in the autumn?!
